Sometimes independence doesn’t arrive in grand, sweeping gestures; it shows up in the everyday things we often overlook. For Jackie, that independence has looked like folding his sheets, ticking off the laundry, cooking meals, and yes… even rocking out at a live concert in the city, all on his own.
Jackie moved into one of Care I Wish’s SIL (Supported Independent Living) homes in Victoria last month. On the surface, it was a simple change, shifting into a home with housemates who were more compatible. But in reality, it’s been the beginning of something far bigger: a journey towards confidence, choice, and a life filled with milestones both big and small.
The everyday stuff has been a real game-changer. Jackie has taken charge of household routines like cooking, bedmaking, and laundry. He even enjoys shopping trips, sometimes independently, where each outing adds to his sense of freedom. These activities may sound ordinary, but for Jackie, they’re powerful wins that boost his self-belief and strengthen his independence.
Then came a milestone that had everyone smiling. Jackie decided to head into the city to see one of his favourite bands live, in a concert he attended completely on his own. It was a bold step, one that required planning, courage, and trust in himself. For Jackie, this wasn’t just a night of music. It was proof that he could step outside his comfort zone, take risks, and experience the world in new ways.
And it doesn’t stop there. Jackie has been making choices that show he’s embracing control over his own life. A fresh haircut at his local barber may seem simple, but for Jackie, it was an act of self-expression and personal choice. Walking out with his new look, his smile said it all. His family has noticed the difference too; their feedback has been filled with pride and encouragement, recognising how much his confidence has grown.
Behind all of these moments is a team of SIL staff who quietly play a huge role in Jackie’s journey. They provide support when needed, encouragement at every turn, and just as importantly, step back at the right moments to let Jackie lead the way. It’s this balance of guidance and independence that makes SIL such a powerful program.
Jackie’s story is more than just a collection of achievements; it’s a reminder of what happens when the right environment and support come together. With a safe home, supportive housemates, and staff who understand when to step in and when to step back, he’s discovering what independence truly feels like.
At Care I Wish, we know SIL is more than just providing a roof over someone’s head. It’s about creating opportunities, encouraging choice, and helping people achieve their NDIS goals. Jackie’s journey is living proof of that, and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of it.
With the right support, every step forward is a step toward freedom and confidence.
