Planks, Picnics & Plenty of Progress: A Month of Saying “Why Not?”

What do you get when you mix a little determination with fresh air, good food, new experiences and a healthy dose of “let’s give it a go”?

A month full of progress.

December was a busy one for one of our participants, with plenty happening both at home and out in the community. From working up a sweat at the local park to enjoying a picnic by the water, the month was filled with moments that showed just how much confidence can grow through everyday experiences.

And yes, there were even a few planks involved.

Physical activity became a real highlight throughout the month. Regular visits to local outdoor spaces gave the participant opportunities to use exercise equipment, build strength and stay active. Whether practising planks along the boardwalk, using the chest press at the park or heading out for scenic walks by the water, there was a clear willingness to keep moving and try new things.

But the biggest wins weren’t necessarily measured by repetitions or kilometres.

They showed up in the community.

A trip to JB Hi-Fi became an opportunity to practise making decisions and handling a purchase independently. Coffee breaks and picnic-style meals at local parks created relaxed opportunities to build confidence in public settings and practise social skills.

Then came the BBQ.

Rather than simply enjoying the food, the participant got involved in preparing and cooking it too. It was a simple community activity, but an important opportunity to put everyday living skills into action.

That’s what makes these moments so valuable. Independence doesn’t always arrive with a big announcement. Sometimes, it looks like choosing what to buy, ordering a coffee, helping prepare lunch or deciding to get outside for a walk.

And then, of course, December had one final surprise waiting: Christmas.

The month wrapped up with a festive celebration at home, complete with the Christmas tree, presents and plenty of smiles. Seeing the participant so engaged and happy during the celebrations was a lovely reminder that wellbeing is about more than routines and goals. It’s also about having experiences to look forward to and memories worth keeping.

Behind each of these moments is a dedicated SIL support team providing encouragement, guidance and the right level of assistance. Rather than doing things for the participant, staff create opportunities to participate, practise skills, make choices and build confidence. This person-centred approach helps turn everyday outings and activities into meaningful steps towards greater independence and individual NDIS goals.

December may have ended, but the progress certainly hasn’t.

From fitness sessions and community outings to BBQs and Christmas celebrations, every experience has helped build confidence, independence and a stronger connection with the community.

One small step, one brave choice, one new experience at a time, progress can take you further than you imagined.
